Take your first steps towards a career in education with the NCFE Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools.
This introductory course is designed for unemployed adults receiving benefits who are looking to change careers or explore opportunities in a school setting, with little or no previous experience required.
You will learn how schools operate, the roles within them and how children develop. You will also explore safeguarding, inclusion and effective communication, helping you understand how to work professionally and contribute to a positive learning environment.
By the end of the course, you will have a stronger foundation of knowledge and greater confidence to progress to Level 2 study, gain voluntary experience or work towards school support roles such as a classroom or teaching assistant.
First cohort runs from the 18th November 2026 to 8th January 2027. Further dates tbc and will be added on an ongoing basis.

On completion of this course, you can take your next steps towards working in a school or college by progressing to:
Level 2 Qualifications: Develop your knowledge and skills for supporting teaching and learning in schools or colleges.
Voluntary Experience: Gain experience in a school setting to build your confidence and understanding of working with children.
Classroom and Teaching Assistant Roles: Work towards entry-level support roles in education, helping teachers support pupils with their learning and development.

This course is free, subject to status. Applicants will need to be referred from DWP Job Centre.
