Entry Requirements and Types of Qualifications
We offer a large range of courses at varying levels and the level you study will depend on your previous achievements and qualifications. The following will help you understand which level is correct for you. If you are still unsure on your level, don’t worry, apply for what you think is correct. We will invite you to attend an interview where we will have a discussion with you and identify where you need to get started!

International Qualifications
If you have any qualifications from abroad, please tell us about them. We are often able to compare what your qualifications are equivalent to here, and this will help us decide which is the right level for you.

Levels 4, 5, and 6
These are higher education qualifications where you can study a vocation in real depth. They are required for many professions.
Entry requirements: You will generally need a level 3 qualification and at least GCSE grades 9-4 in English language and Maths.
Progression: Choose from higher level qualifications or employment.
Examples of level 4, 5 and 6 qualifications: Higher National Certificate (HNC) – 4, Foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) – 5, Degree (BA or BSc) or degree apprenticeship – 6

Level 3
These courses can provide you with advanced level skills and combine both practical and theoretical specialist knowledge. This level is ideal for those who wish to progress to university or higher level employment.
Entry requirements: Depending on the course, generally you’ll need 4 GCSEs grades 9-4/A-C or a suitable Level 2 qualification. Most level 3 courses require English language and Maths Level 2 qualifications.
Progression: Choose from employment, an advanced or degree apprenticeship or university.
Examples of Level 3 qualifications: A levels, Level 3 certificate, diploma, award, T Levels, Access, International Baccalaureate (IB), Scottish Highers.
(NB: T Levels, Access courses, Extended diplomas, IBs, and Scottish Highers are considered equivalent to 3 x A levels and often satisfy university entry requirements, depending on the course)

Level 2
You’ll concentrate on your preferred subject and cover all the essentials to progress to employment or next level study.
Entry requirements: Depending on the course, generally you’ll need 3 GCSEs grades 3/D or above at GCSE or an appropriate Level 1 qualification.
Progression: Step up to Level 3 courses, begin an advanced apprenticeship or find employment/further training.
Examples of Level 2 qualifications: GCSEs grade 9-4 (A-C), Level 2 certificate, diploma, award, pre-entry Access, functional skills Level 2.

Level 1
Get the core knowledge and skills you need for success at College and in your chosen career.
Entry requirements: Depending on the course, as a guide you may need 2 GCSEs at grades 1-2 or a suitable Entry Level qualification.
Progression: Join a Level 2 course, find an intermediate apprenticeship or junior level employment.
Examples of Level 1 qualifications: GCSE grades 3-1 (D-G), functional skills Level 1, Level 1 diploma.

Entry Level (1, 2, 3 and Pre-Entry)
Gain essential skills for life and progression.
Entry requirements: No formal entry requirements.
Progression: Continue to improve your skills with higher entry level study, move on to Level 1 or find employment.
