AS Chemistry

Qualification AS Chemistry
Subject Area Science
Attendance Full Time
Age Group(s) 16-18 year olds

Course Content

This course involves a content-led and flexible approach where the specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of chemistry. Teaching of practical skills will be integrated with the theoretical topics and they're assessed both through written papers.

Module 1: Development of practical skills in chemistry

  • Practical skills assessed in a written examination

Module 2: Foundations in chemistry

  • Atoms, compounds, molecules and equations
  • Amount of substance
  • Acid–base and redox reactions
  • Electrons, bonding and structure

Module 3: Periodic table and energy

  • The periodic table and periodicity
  • Group 2 and the halogens
  • Qualitative analysis
  • Enthalpy changes
  • Reaction rates and equilibrium (qualitative)

Module 4: Core organic chemistry

  • Basic concepts
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Alcohols and haloalkanes
  • Organic synthesis
  • Analytical techniques (IR and MS)

Course Outcomes

  • Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other
  • Develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods
  • Develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills
  • Develop their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject
  • Understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society (as exemplified in ‘How Science Works’ (HSW)).

Progression

A useful top up qualification to add UCAS points to a candidates other level 3 qualification, very useful for applying when for science course at university such as Pharmacy, Biochemistry and Chemistry.
