Course
The Level 4 certificate is a teaching qualification, in which you will gain a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer, planning for inclusive learning, methods in delivering and assessing in education and training, and the use of resources in education and training.
Outline
The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector. Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.
There is a requirement for a minimum of 30 hours of practice for this qualification with a minimum of 3 assessed observations.
Entry Requirements
- Formal evidence will be required of the following:
- Aged 19 plus
- Resident in the UK
- Applicants need to be qualified, proficient or experienced in the subject which they intend to teach.
- Level 3 qualification in the subject you would like to teach.
- It is recommended that trainee teachers will have been assessed as competent at level 2 in English and maths prior to the completion of their CET.
- You must be available to attend all classes in person or online as per course requirements. It is not a distance learning course.

The qualification allows candidates to progress into employment as teachers/trainers, as well as to the following NCFE qualification:
- Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training
Working as a teacher or trainer in post-16 education.

This qualification may enhance employment opportunities and provide a basis for progression to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

The qualification provides an introduction to teaching and aims to meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, such as:
• individuals not currently in a teaching or training role
• individuals currently teaching and training (including those who have just begun teaching and training)
• individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a qualification that provides an introduction to teaching.
This qualification is suitable for individuals who:
- want a qualification focused on practical teaching
- want a choice of optional units that reflects the context in which they teach
- are currently teaching and want to have their practice and experience accredited;
- are not currently teaching but can meet the minimum teaching practice requirement of 30 hours
- are able to undertake a qualification of medium size.
- have the potential to study at this level which equates to the first year of an undergraduate degree
- are willing to undertake an initial assessment of their skills in maths, English and ICT
Course content
It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment. Usually completed in two terms.

How will you be assessed?
The qualification will be assessed by a combination of assignments and observation of teaching or training.
Is there an interview?
A satisfactory initial assessment in literacy and numeracy, which will include a 30-minute hand-written assessment. You will need to possess reasonable levels of language, literacy and numeracy for entry onto the Level 4 CET course.
