Course

The AET is a 12 credit qualification that offers an introduction to teaching in the education and training sector. Please note that there is no requirement to have this qualification in order to join a Level 4 CET or a Level 5 DET as the suite of qualifications is not designed primarily as a progression route to full qualification.

Outline

This knowledge-based teaching qualification has no minimum teaching practice requirement and therefore may be taken by individuals who are not in a teaching role. However, there is a minimum requirement to take part in micro teaching (peer teaching) which involves planning an observed and assessed teaching session for a specific group of learners (usually the peer group of classmates), delivering and reviewing the session and responding to feedback from the observer and the ‘learners’. Trainee teachers who are already in a teaching role may be able to use their usual workplace teaching for this observed teaching session.

Entry Requirements

  • Formal evidence will be required of the following:
  • Aged 19 plus
  • Resident in the UK
  • Applicants need to be qualified, proficient or experienced in the subject which they intend to teach.
  • It is recommended that trainee teachers will have been assessed as competent at level 2 in English and maths prior to the completion of their CET.
  • You must be available to attend all classes in person or online as per course requirements. It is not a distance learning course.

What can it lead to?

The level 3 award offers limited opportunities for employment but it may provide an informed basis for subsequent decision making in terms of further qualification or progression.

The qualification allows candidates to progress into the following NCFE qualifications:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
  •
  • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

What are the course outcomes?

  • Gain a nationally recognised qualification
  • Create a long-standing career pathway within the education sector
  • Courses are delivered via distance learning, allowing learners to choose when and where to study
  • Increase your awareness of education and training and be able to support individuals at each stage of their learning journey
  • Engaging and interactive activities that stretch learners’ thinking and help put their new, extended knowledge into practice
  • Study will develop learners’ knowledge, skills and confidence to enhance their future work and life.

Who is the course for?

This qualification is aimed at anyone who wishes to attain an introductory teaching qualification, which prepares
learners for teaching or training in a wide range of contexts. Learners are not required to be in a teaching position to complete this course.

The qualification is suitable for individuals who wish to teach in the Further Education and Skills Sector and forms a foundation for those with little or no previous experience of teaching or training. This qualification is suitable for learners aged 19 or above.

Course Content

The qualification covers:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education
  • Understanding assessment in education and training

How will you be assessed?

The qualification will be assessed by a combination of assignments and an observed and assessed teaching session for a specific group of learners.

Is there an interview?

A satisfactory initial assessment in literacy and numeracy, which will include a 30-minute hand-written assessment. You will need to possess reasonable levels of language, literacy and numeracy for entry onto the Level 3 AET course.
