Schools

Our work with local schools

Stanmore College offers a range of services to local both primary and secondary schools. For example, the College can run ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes in schools for parents whose first language is not English, maths for parents, I.T. classes and classes on using digital devices including smart phones and even mindfulness and yoga to support wellbeing.

The above services are also available to High Schools and, in addition the College regularly attends events and speaks to students in Years 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 about post-16 options

The Government’s expectation is that schools and colleges work towards the Gatsby benchmarks. There are 8 benchmarks which constitute ‘good practice’ in career guidance for schools and colleges as follows:

  1. A stable careers’ programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each student
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

Stanmore College’s curriculum offer is linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks. The College’s curriculum also meets its commitment to the Technical and Further Education Bill's amendment passed in the House of Lords in February 2017 by Lord Baker. Qualified careers staff are based at college and supported by external advisers, and the College’s staff frequently visit schools to advise and answer any questions about post 16 provision, Higher Education and career opportunities.

The transition from High School to College, Sixth Form or apprenticeships can seem daunting to young people – Stanmore College provides support to learners to progress from schools to further education and apprenticeships. It is important that young people, parents and school staff are aware of the range of opportunities available to enable the best choice for each individual student.

Stanmore College helps to increase awareness of the many career opportunities available to young people and the vocational or academic qualification route they may need to take to succeed in their chosen career.

College staff work with schools to:

  • collaborate by attending careers events, mock interview events, post-16s options events, parents’ evenings and presentations on areas of interest e.g., of late there have been a lot of queries about T levels
  • provide advice and guidance
  • sharing information about the range of provision available at the college and where it can lead to
  • arranging visits to the college for individual learners or groups and Open events
  • organising taster events and workshops as required by schools for one or a range of subject areas to enable learners to try out and experience what a particular study programme involves
  • working with schools, careers advisers, Harrow Council, Prospects, and other stakeholders on provision for those who are not in education, employment or training (NEET)
  • delivering presentations and talks on topics as requested by schools.

Stanmore College is Matrix Accredited meaning it has been awarded the Matrix kitemark for the quality of its information, advice and guidance.

Post 16 Options Evenings, Parents Evenings and Careers fair

Stanmore College staff frequently attend all the above at schools to offer advice and guidance to learners, their parents and guardians and meet and engage with school staff.

College Open Events and tours of the College

In addition to our planned Open events, College staff are happy to work with schools and parents to offer bespoke tours of the College. This often helps learners to get a feel for how studying in a college might be like and assists school staff in advising learners appropriately.

Taster days

Taster days/events are held throughout the year to engage learners. These can be a half or full day depending on a school’s timetable and requirements, and schools can specify which subjects they would like included.

Presentations

Our industry experienced staff frequently attend schools and deliver informative presentations to teachers, learners and their parents/ guardians at times to suit respective schools.

CPD

Stanmore College can arrange and host a range of events or training for teachers and careers advisers. These events are a great opportunity to visit the College, view facilities and hear from vocational teaching teams on the options available to young people.

Our Senior Leadership Team is also available to deliver sessions on policy developments in education, such as T Levels, SEND, Gatsby Benchmarks etc.
