Course Content

UAL Diploma is a practical, work-related one year course equivalent to 4 GCSEs. Students will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. These will help students be successful in the level 3 programme, as well as learning about employment.

This course aims to prepare students who are strongly interested in pursuing art and design to level 3. You will work across a variety of disciplines ad are actively encouraged to develop your problem-solving ability and practical skills in 2D, 3D and lens & digital areas of study. Units are taught through briefs and workshop projects with no exams and are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

Course Outcomes

The course of three main outcomes which are 2D, 3D and lens & digital in your chosen specialist area of interest. These are underpinned with art history, materials and technique study and critical thinking.

2D:

Functional skills or GCSEs in maths and English

Progression

Art & Design Extended Diploma Level 3 or other level 3 courses.

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including English
  • Successful attendance and satisfactory references at interview
  • Evidence of creative work presented at interview

Assessment

Each unit has practical tasks and supporting written work with interim assessment points and a final. The grades are given as pass, merit and distinction. There are no exams on the main award although there are exams for functional skills and GCSE.

Equipment

You will be required to buy sketchbooks for your units and a range of art material throughout the year. The department visits museums that will have a fee.
