Studying at Stanmore College is an investment in your future. It is essential that attending college remains affordable and that you have access to any eligible financial support. Our Student Services team can assist with applications for bursaries or additional funding.

Financial Support for 16-18

If your annual gross household income is £30,000 or below, you may be eligible for a college bursary. Bursary payments are made directly into the student’s own bank account via BACS. They are contingent upon on your high attendance and good punctuality as well as individual circumstances.

16-18 Discretionary Bursary

If you are a student aged 16-18 as of 31st August, then typically you will not pay any tuition fees, registration fees or exam fees for your course. You may have to pay for other course related costs, such as meals and travel. If you are 19 in the academic year, you will be supported under the specific 16-19 Discretionary Bursary.

16-19 Vulnerable Learner Bursary (Government Scheme)

Stanmore College support vulnerable students in line with the Government/ESFA guidance. If you are aged 16-19 on 31 August of an academic year, you could be eligible for an award up to £1,200 to help you towards college related expenses such as: travel costs, essential trips, lunches, equipment costs etc. This will be assessed and will depend on your individual financial situation.

Free College Meals

These are offered to you if you are 16-18 on 31st August, or if you are 19+ student continuing because you started your course when 16-18, or if you have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).

Oyster Cards

If you are within London, you can apply for an Oyster Card to help you with your travel expenses to attend college. Student services will stamp your form for as either 16+ or as an 18+ application. Once you complete your online form, we will receive a request from TFL to approve your status.

If you live outside of London then 16+ applications can only be made by your parent/carer. If you are 18+ outside of London, then you need to submit your own application.

If you are 18 on 31 August, you can still apply for 16+ Oyster card as long as you are in full time education.

If you are 18+ you will be required to pay TFL a non-refundable £20 application fee. this amount will not be refunded by TFL (even if you change your application to 16+).

  • 16+ Oyster gives you free travel on buses, 50% off trains.
  • 16+ Oyster if you are living outside London gives 50% off buses and trains.
16+ Zip Oyster photocard
  • 18+ Oyster gives 30% off buses and trains.
  • 18+ If you are living outside London, Oyster applications are currently not available.

Financial Support for +19/Adults

Students aged 19 and over on 31st August will normally pay registration, tuition, exam fees, as well as costs for kits, books, activities, or excursions. 

19+ Discretionary Bursary

The 19+ Bursary is for learners studying a Level 1, Level 2 or a first full Level 3 qualification. You must be aged 19 or over on 31st August, with a gross household income of £30,000 or less.

Advanced Learner Loan

You can apply for a government Advanced Learning Loan if you are aged +19/Adult studying an eligible Level 3 or above course, such as Access to Higher Education (HE). With the Advanced learner Loan, there’s no upfront tuition costs, and your loan payback would depend on your income level when you start your employment. If you progress from an Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma course to complete a Higher Education (HE) Degree, you can have your Advanced Learning Loan for the Access course written off and you would not need to make repayments.

To be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan you will be need to apply via Student Finance England. You will need to prove gross household income of less than £30,000 per annum.
