Course Content

The Skills for Professions suite of qualifications are designed to provide learners with the underpinning skills and knowledge required to progress to further study on courses such as Access to Higher Education Diplomas.

The qualifications would be suitable for learners who:

  • want to progress to Level 3 courses within further or higher education such as Access to HE Diplomas in Nursing, Pharmacy and Biomedical Science, Psychology and Computing
  • want to study for a vocational qualification alongside GCSEs or other subjects
  • need to develop advanced learning skills to help them progress to higher level study
  • want to develop their knowledge and skills in a particular vocational area

Course Outcomes

The purpose of these qualifications is to provide learners with the underpinning skills and knowledge required to progress to further study for careers in applied science and technology and, ultimately, to work in these areas or related sectors. To do this learners study units such as:

  • Chemistry and our Earth
  • Energy and our Universe
  • Biology and our Environment
  • Electronics in Action

It is expected that learners undertake maths and English alongside the course to allow them to achieve the entry criteria required for progression to a Level 3 Access course.

Progression

  • Level 3 courses within further or higher education, such as Access to HE Diplomas in Nursing, Pharmacy and Biomedical Science, Psychology and Computing
  • A vocational qualification alongside GCSEs or other subjects

Entry Requirements

Level 1 Functional Skills English and Level 1 Functional Skills maths. An interest in science is essential. You will need to complete initial assessments in English and maths and a short piece of writing at the interview session to assess suitability for the course.

Assessment

All assessments are internal and there are no external examinations. Learners will build a portfolio of assignments. These portfolios are verified by OCN. Students complete assignments for each unit and these can come in the following forms:

  • Written essays
  • Experiments and scientific reports
  • Presentations
  • Open and closed book tests
  • Vivas
