Trip to ABB Robotics Training Centre

A group of Engineering students and T Level Engineering students recently attended a successful field visit to the ABB Robotics Training Centre.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with industrial robotics and see how their classroom learning translates into real-world applications.

The day began with a warm welcome from tutor Simon, who provided an overview of the schedule. The students then toured the facility, observing robots undergoing testing and maintenance before taking part in a series of interactive sessions. They learned how to control robots using pendants, practised jogging the robots, and were introduced to basic programming for robotic arms. A highlight of the day was a coding competition, where students raced to complete a virtual track, with the fastest coder winning a voucher. The trip concluded with a session on simulation and programming for various industrial applications.

The experience reinforced key robotics concepts, improved students’ practical skills, and will enhance their employability. T-Level students also gained insights that may support future apprenticeship opportunities. Additionally, ABB has offered the college potential spots in their five-day training programme, providing further advanced learning opportunities.

Overall, the trip was a great success, leaving students inspired and more confident about their future in robotics.
