Safer Internet Day 2026: T Level Accounting Students Debate the Future of AI

To mark Safer Internet Day 2026, Stanmore College T Level Accounting students explored the opportunities and ethical challenges of artificial intelligence, examining how smart technology demands safe, responsible choices in modern business.

Safer Internet Day 2026, marked on 10 February and themed “Smart tech, safe choices: exploring the safe and responsible use of AI,” gave our T Level Accounting students the chance to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping accounting and the wider business world.

In the lead-up to the day, students took part in a series of structured debates, extending the conversation and allowing them to explore the topic in depth from multiple perspectives.

AI in Accounting: Balancing Innovation with Responsibility

Students explored how AI can enhance efficiency, accuracy and financial insight. They discussed how technologies such as automated invoice processing, reconciliations and advanced data analysis are streamlining routine tasks and supporting faster decision-making.

However, they also considered the challenges. High implementation costs, the need for staff training, and ethical concerns, including bias, transparency and data confidentiality, were all debated thoughtfully.

Importantly, students reflected on how AI intersects with the core ethical principles of accounting: integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, and confidentiality. While AI can strengthen decision-making, students agreed that professional judgement and human oversight remain essential.

AI’s Wider Impact on Business

The discussions extended beyond accounting functions to consider AI’s influence across the broader business landscape. Key themes included:

  • Governance and accountability: Who is responsible for AI-driven decisions?
  • Data quality and security: AI systems rely on accurate, protected information.
  • Transparency and explainability: Stakeholders must understand how decisions are generated.
  • Bias and fairness: Ensuring AI systems support ethical and inclusive business practice.

By analysing these issues, students developed a deeper understanding of how emerging technologies interact with strategy, regulation and corporate responsibility.

Developing Future-Ready Professionals

At Stanmore College, T Level Accounting goes beyond academic study. Activities like these debates help students strengthen critical thinking, teamwork and ethical reasoning skills that are essential in today’s technology-driven workplace.

Safer Internet Day 2026 served as a timely reminder that while AI is a powerful and transformative tool, its impact depends on how responsibly it is used. Our students left the discussions better prepared to make informed, ethical decisions in their future careers, ready to embrace innovation while upholding professional standards.

Stanmore College continues to equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills and ethical awareness needed for the workplace of tomorrow.
