Inspiring the Future: Our ITC Students Explore Cybersecurity with Industry Expert Oyekemi Abioye
We were excited to welcome Oyekemi Abioye, Cybersecurity Analyst from London Metropolitan University, to deliver an insightful and engaging guest lecture to our ITC students on the topic: “Safeguarding the Digital Future – Threats, Resilience, and Career Pathways in a Connected World.”
The session, which took place on 7th October, offered an eye-opening exploration of the dynamic world of cybersecurity, broadening students’ understanding of today’s digital threats and the diverse career paths—such as Cybersecurity Analyst, Compliance Officer, Risk Analyst, and Ethical Hacker—that work to combat them.
Led by the experienced Oyekemi, the session explored key areas, including:
- Network Security — Understanding how systems are defended against cyber intrusions.
- Common System Vulnerabilities — Identifying and addressing the weak points hackers often exploit.
- Data Protection — Learning how to secure personal and organizational information.
- Cybersecurity Career Pathways — Exploring roles, skills, and qualifications needed in the industry.
Our students also took part in practical activities that deepened their learning:
- Phishing Awareness — Spotting suspicious messages and websites.
- Incident Response Planning (PICERL) — Understanding the six stages: Preparation, Identification, Containment, Eradication, Recovery, and Lessons Learned.
- Cybersecurity Best Practices — Sharing effective strategies to stay safe online.
The session saw enthusiastic participation from ITC Level 3 students across both Year 1 and Year 2 programmes. They engaged in lively discussions and hands-on activities that brought the content to life. This valuable learning experience was coordinated by our dedicated IT lecturers, who ensured the session was inclusive and accessible to all students.
A huge thank you to Oyekemi Abioye for sharing her expertise and inspiring our students to think critically about the digital world around them. We look forward to seeing how this session will influence their academic paths and future careers in tech.
Well done to all our students for their engagement, curiosity, and professionalism throughout the session!
