I Need Paid Work!

“I need paid work!” we hear this every day from students, and we get that, all of us need money to survive, but how will we get a paid job and why should someone pay us?

On 14 November, the Stanmore College Work Experience Team attended the West London Alliance Youth Summit, an inspiring event that brought together schools, colleges, universities, employers, charities, and government representatives to discuss youth unemployment.

Three key reasons behind youth unemployment were highlighted:

  • Lack of work experience
  • Anxiety and mental health challenges
  • Lack of local job opportunities

The lack of work experience is especially relevant to Stanmore College’s aim to deliver a curriculum focused on employability and work-ready skills. The team also discussed solutions, including the importance of unpaid work placements in helping students develop key skills and stand out when applying for jobs.

As shared by Ruhina, our Work Experience and Industry Team Leader, “I personally volunteered in a primary school for a year during a career break. That experience helped me move back into paid work.

The summit also raised an important question, who is responsible for tackling youth unemployment? The answer is, everyone! Students, teachers, parents, employers, and the work placement team all have a role to play. Employers at the event showed their willingness to offer opportunities when students show professionalism and commitment.

Stanmore College’s Work Experience Team continues to arrange employer talks and work placements, both virtually and in person, to help students gain valuable experience. Many students have gone on to secure paid jobs after impressing employers during their placements.

Our special thanks to all employers and partners supporting students in building a brighter future.
