Creative Futures in Focus: UAL Inspires Students to Plan Their Next Steps

Our Art and Design and Creative Media students gained first-hand insight into university life, portfolio development and career pathways in the creative industries during a special progression event with experts from the University of the Arts London (UAL).

On February 12th students took an important step towards their future careers as they welcomed guest speakers from UAL and London College of Communication. The session was designed to give students a clearer understanding of progression routes within the creative industries and how to successfully prepare for them.

The event featured a presentation from the UAL Awarding Body and the INSIGHT programme, outlining the wide range of courses available after college and explaining progression pathways into university, apprenticeships and employment. Students gained valuable advice on how to approach university interviews, as well as practical guidance on developing a professional portfolio suitable for higher education, apprenticeships and entry-level roles in the creative sector.

Gavin Waters, representing London College of Communication, provided detailed insight into what UAL institutions look for in a strong portfolio submission. He also introduced students to the free INSIGHT sessions, which offer opportunities to explore specialist creative disciplines within a university setting, giving students a taste of what studying at degree level involves.

A highlight of the session was hearing from Krishna, a second-year Games and Animation student at London College of Communication. She shared examples of her project work, spoke candidly about university life, and offered practical advice on preparing a portfolio and navigating progression within the creative sector. Hearing directly from a current student helped demystify the transition from college to university and made the journey feel more achievable.

Overall, the event provided meaningful insight into higher education expectations, strengthened students’ understanding of progression routes, and boosted their confidence as they begin planning their next steps in the creative industries.
