This course is perfect for anyone aiming to achieve a GCSE English qualification and looking to enhance their skills before they enrol. It offers a head start with the AQA GCSE English syllabus and gives you the foundations to work towards a grade 4.

English and Maths qualification at grade 2 or Functional Skills at Entry 3

What can it lead to? 

You will develop your skills and understanding in analysing and interpreting a variety of texts; clear communication; accurate and effective writing including a personal style of writing and the use of a wide variety of vocabulary, correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. You will learn about GCSE English language features and structural techniques, creative writing and transactional writing styles. 

What are the course outcomes? 

The “Stepping Stones to GCSE English” course aims to build a solid foundation in English skills, preparing students for the GCSE English Language course. Here are some common course outcomes: 

  1. Reading Comprehension: Develop strategies for reading comprehension, such as skimming, scanning, and summarizing. 
  1. Text Analysis: Analyse language features used in Pre and Post 21st Century texts and explore their impact on the reader. Explore impact of structural features in both fiction and non-fiction and how the writer’s perspective and be supported with evidence. 
  1. Writing Skills: Improve spelling, punctuation and grammar use along with writing for a specific purpose for an audience. 
  1. Planning and Editing: Develop planning skills and how to check for SPAG. 

These outcomes are designed to ensure that students are well-prepared for the challenges of the GCSE English Language course and have the skills needed for further education. 

These courses are designed to build confidence and fluency in English, preparing learners for real-world situations, further education, and employment.

The “Stepping Up to GCSE English” course is designed for students who need additional support to reach the level required for GCSE English. This includes: ESOL progressing learners, learners with a Level 1 Functional skills qualification, adults wanting to get back into education and resit GCSEs and employers who want to -
