< PreviousSupporting students with additional needs Supporting your wellbeing As soon as you enrol you will sit down with your tutor to discuss and design an individual learning plan with goals, that reflect your needs, this will be updated regularly with your tutor. You can access counselling support as well as one-off support and advice. If you have a diagnosed mental health concern we will do all we can to support you. Specialist learning support is available for students with a wide range of additional needs including specific learning difficulties e.g. dyslexia, sensory loss or a physical disability. We want you to achieve your best and our services for students, support teams and tutors are all available to help you with your course, career plans and any personal issues that may be affecting you.• A modern and dynamic learning resources centre with state-of-the-art equipment. • Specialist technology and equipment including computer software, concept keyboards, voice recognition facilities, scanner facilities and large print copies. • Online resources on StudySpace, our student portal. In addition to this support, your work will be closely monitored and parents / guardians will be kept informed of your progress by means of up-to-date, online reports. You will be able to access a variety of learning resources which will help support your learning. These include: The term ‘safeguarding children and young people’ includes child protection and a preventative approach to keeping young people safe. As such ‘Safeguarding’ includes health and safety, bullying, first aid, security, supporting the needs of those with medical conditions, safeguarding from drugs and substance abuse and the Prevent Duty to protect learners from being drawn into extremism. Stanmore College is closely linked with the Harrow Local Safeguarding Children’s Board and the Harrow Prevent Team. Current students also have access to the Careers and Employability resources via Studyspace. Careers is located on the 1st floor of the Elm BuildingThe Gatsby Benchmarks are embedded into the curriculum at Stanmore College: • a stable Careers programme; • learning from career & labour market information; • linking curriculum learning to careers; • encounters with employers & employees; • experiences of workplaces; • encounters with further & higher education; • personal guidance. We provide guidance and support with researching and applying to university, writing your personal statement, and preparing for an interview. Encounters with Higher Education 21 Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers Students are invited to participate in events designed to build employability skills and explore options in education and employment such as the HE and Careers Fair and university and employer presentations.Student Parliament Student Union Student Governor Student Ambassador The Student Parliament is gives students opportunities to practise democratic processes. The meetings are attended by elected course representatives and Students’ Union Officers from across the college, so don’t forget to discuss matters with your course representatives! They will make sure that the Student Voice is heard loud and clear within the College. Stanmore College Student Union is a member organisation of the National Union of Students (NUS) which represents students’ unions nationally and offers the exclusive Totum card which entitles you to thousands of fantastic in-store and online deals, as well as vouchers and discounts for shopping, stationary, travel, insurance and much, much more! Become a student governor and ensure that students are at the heart of the decision-making process. If you choose to become a student ambassador you’ll work closely with all areas of the College Curriculum Team, Admissions, and the Marketing Team to support with a variety of events and activities. STUDENT PARLIAMENT 22 The Student Union is run by learners and works to improve all aspects of college life. Student unions facilitate and organise student activities, peer support and volunteering. They also debate, lobby and campaign on behalf of all students and provide an insight from a students’ perspective into the learner journey. You can run for a Student Union position whilst you’re at college, to become the voice of your peers. Studying at Stanmore College is an investment in your future. It is important that attending college is affordable and that you have access to any financial support for which you are eligible. Our Student Services team can help you to apply for additional bursaries or funding. Bursary payments will be paid by BACS directly into a student’s OWN bank account and these are subject to having high attendance and good punctuality. Successful applicants receive funds for course related expenditure. This is based on a low household income (amount is set annually) National 16-18 bursary: Enhanced 16-18 bursary for those who are: • in care; • a care leaver; • living independently on income support or universal credit; • severely disabled and getting both ESA and DLA. Student Finance at Stanmore also offers: • oyster card assistance; • reference letter i.e immigration/ council tax and more; • assistance with books/particular materials that would enable no barriers to education; • free school meal applications. 23 FINANCIAL SUPPORTStanmore College offers courses at many levels so that you can progress in learning or onto better employment opportunities. If you are not sure which is the right level for you, our trained staff will be happy to help. Level 2 qualifications enable students to build the skills and knowledge that employers want leading to better employment opportunities. Entry requirements: Mainly grade 3’s at GCSE or have successfully completed a level 1 qualification. Qualifications available at this level: Apprenticeships, GCSEs, BTECs, CACHE, AAT, VTCT and UAL. LEVEL LEVEL LEVEL These courses can provide you with advanced level skills which combine both practical and theoretical knowledge. This level is ideal for those wanting to go onto higher education or higher level employment. 1 2 3 Qualifications at this level can include practical experience, either at college or through work experience. Entry requirements: GCSEs at grades 2-1 or have successfully completed an entry level qualification. Qualifications available at this level: BTECs, CACHE, VTCT and UAL. Entry requirements: Grades 9-4 at GCSE or have successfully completed a level 2 qualification. Qualifications available at this level: UAL Diplomas, BTECs (extended), CACHE, Apprenticeships, Access to HE, CACHE, AAT and VTCT. Please note: If you do not already have grades 9 to 4 in GCSE English and maths, you will have to retake these courses at a suitable level alongside a study programme to help you progress to university or employment. CHOOSING A COURSE 24How To Apply To apply online, simply click on the ‘Apply Now’ button on our website, stanmore.ac.uk Once you have filled in your details on the form, just press submit and look out for a confirmation email from us. All applications received by the College will be processed and students will be contacted to arrange an interview. You can apply by using our online application form or complete a printed form and return it to the College address. You can request an application form by contacting us on 020 8420 7700 or email enquiries@stanmore.ac.uk • You will be required to attend an interview at the College to assess your interests in, and commitment to, the course. • We would then send you an offer letter. • You would later receive a letter inviting you to the College during the summer to enrol (once you have your GCSE results if you are joining us from school). • Come in to enrol and collect your student ID card. If, for any reason, you did not attain the results you were expecting and did not meet the requirements of our offer, don’t worry – we have staff on hand to make sure we find a suitable alternative course for you at enrolment.
