Level 3 Access to HE Health & Social Care at Stanmore College
The Access to Health and Social Care course offers you the opportunity to study and gain a critical understanding of a wide range of subjects that are important in a care-based profession. All students study sociology and psychology and depending on your chosen career path, there are opportunities to specialise in biology or social work skills.
Alongside your main academic subjects, you will receive training in important study skills, such as revision skills, exam techniques, ICT and essay writing.
1 year full-time (approximately 4 days per week). Classes will be timetabled wherever possible between 9.30 am and 3.00 pm to take into account childcare issues and employment.
This course is for students aiming for a career in health and social care by giving them a recognised qualification to help them gain entry to university. The course will provide subject knowledge and help to develop confidence and study skills to help them progress towards further career possibilities. The Access to Higher Education Health and Social Care Diploma is especially designed for adults who have had a break from studying and is accepted by universities as an alternative to A-levels. This course offers students the opportunity to study either for a social work pathway or a nursing pathway.
Access courses are designed to enable learners to progress onto the higher education course of their choosing. Students are supported through the UCAS process by their personal tutors and will be given specialist advice and guidance about their future career pathways.
A range of careers within the Health and Social Care sector.
You will need two GCSEs at grade 5 in English and maths and will need to sit a brief entrance test. Specialist pathways may require higher grades: these will be discussed as part of your interview for the course.
Complete initial assessments in English and maths and a short piece of writing at the interview session to assess suitability for the course.
Assessment is continuous and consists of coursework, portfolio building and regular one-to-one time with a personal tutor.
The sessions are varied and include tutored lectures, discussions, independent research and group work. There are a range of assessment methods used throughout the year, such as essays, presentations, reports and tests. Applicants who study biology units (with a view to pursuing a healthcare vocation) may also undertake laboratory practicals as part of their course.
